A lost hiker who spent two nights alone in the wilderness near Estes Park was tired, dehydrated and hungry when found Thursday, but not seriously injured, according to the Larimer County Sheriff's Office.
The Sheriff's Office said Patrick Higgins, 52, of Maryland, began to hike by himself at about 9 a.m. Tuesday. He strayed from a group with the Men’s Leadership Alliance of Boulder.
He was scheduled to return later that evening, but he never showed up.
Larimer County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Services and Larimer County Search and Rescue responded to the area known as Hell’s Canyon near Estes Park to begin the search. They were unable to locate Higgins, so Thursday the Larimer County Emergency Services, Civil Air Patrol, Larimer County Search and Rescue and Rocky Mountain Rescue of Boulder worked to continue the search.
When Higgins was found, he was able to walk out under his own power.
Hell’s Canyon is extremely steep and has rocky terrain, sheriff’s officials said, but Higgins was equipped for the hike and had a map, compass, rain gear, whistle, matches and some food and water.
