A former Louisville man convicted of sending hundreds of thousands of spam e-mail messages has walked away from his federal prison camp, officials confirmed Tuesday.

Edward “Eddie” Davidson, 35, dubbed the “Spam King,” walked away from his minimum-security camp in Florence sometime Monday, said Mike Truman, spokesman for the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

The U.S. Marshals Service has taken over the search, aided by the FBI, IRS and Rocky Mountain Safe Streets Task Force.

Davidson was serving a 21-month sentence at the camp after he pleaded guilty in December to providing spam messaging services for 19 companies.

He was last seen in Lakewood, according to a Department of Justice news release.

Davidson was indicted by a federal grand jury last summer for sending large volumes of spam, or unsolicited commercial e-mails, in an effort to promote the sale of a company’s stock.

Prosecutors say Davidson had run a spamming business from his home in Bennett since 2002, sending e-mail advertisements on behalf of companies selling perfume, watches and other items.

In 2005, he began to send hundreds of thousands of e-mails on behalf of a Texas company that was attempting to sell its stock, touting it as a good buy. Prosecutors said the e-mails contained false header information that concealed the actual sender’s identity.

Sentenced in April, Davidson was ordered to pay $714,139 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service and to forfeit property he purchased, including gold coins.

"Why in god's name would we need to outsource something like that as well?!"

It's the libertarian ideal.

"You often read statistics about how much money this loathsome crapola costs everyone by clogging up the wheels of commerce."

And yet you keep posting....

Heck, after they catch him the drama will really start, with the DA's making up all sorts of charges to throw at him, probably even child abuse if they think they can get away with it. (illogical, yes, they don't need no stinkin' reason!)

All that said, this arrogant pr^ck deserved the time he got, and now he's dumb enough to add more time for escaping than what he had to serve in the first place. Hope they find him with a self-inflicted case of rigor mortis.

This is so cool because when they capture the creep he'll spend an extra 5 years in jail and it won't be a minimum security jail either!

We would have saved more tax dollars if they just executed him. Bullets are cheap!

That wasn't eap. I was reading on her account. I'm the mystery poster. Oh, like it never happened to you. Must be the heat.

This isn't eap either.

The king-o-spam is on the lam! (or is it lamb?)

Now I understand why I got so much more spam than usual in the past day. My spam filter got clogged, and now I gotta go clean it. Dang!

Have they caught this creep yet? I can hardly wait until they get him the federal pen! He'll find out what it feels like to be spammed until your butt hurts! a fitting punishment for a creep who stole hours of my time by spamming me.

It's lam (unless he went to Wyoming).
